Meet Mrs. Berkemeier
Welcome to Second Grade! I am so excited to work with you and your child this year as they continue to grow and develop as independent learners, community participants, and Disciples of Christ! We will learn many new things and make many wonderful memories!
I hail from a small suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, where I grew up with two sisters and one brother. My brother has five children, 9-19 years of age, and I am very proud to be an aunt. Living further from home than I ever thought I would, I really treasure the time that I get to spend with them, which is even less now due to the pandemic. We’ve gotten very good at Facebook Messenger video chats as a result. Besides spending time with family and friends, I enjoy playing volleyball and basketball, going swimming, hula hooping, (freestyle) dancing, reading, and building puzzles. Before COVID-19, I taught private swim lessons at the YMCA and enjoyed Aqua Zumba classes there as well! Skydiving and hot air ballooning are 2 items on my bucket list that I’ve already checked off! And I would love to do both again! I saw/swam in the ocean for the first time last summer, and shark cage diving sounds exciting for my next ocean adventure! Eight years ago I went on a pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome, Italy and would love to go back again soon! I also hope to travel to Ireland in my lifetime.
I have attended Catholic schools from Kindergarten to graduate school, receiving both my Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education and Master’s in Literacy from the University of Dayton. I participated in a post-graduate teacher service program called Lalanne and taught third grade for two years at St. Paul Catholic School in Owosso. This will be my sixth year at St. Mary School. Catholic education has played a huge role in my life, and I am humbled to be a part of your child’s faith formation during this sacramental year. I look forward to all of the challenges and triumphs that this year will bring! I am confident that, with your support and collaboration, this will be a great year in second grade for all of us!
